Palais de la Porte Doree - Tropical Aquarium

The Palais de la Porte Doree - Tropical Aquarium or The Palace of the Golden Gate, was built for the colonial exhibition of 1931 and its architecture is based upon an Art Deco model.

It was initially responsible for informing the public about colonial culture, but the museum's collection of the arts of Africa and Oceania left the building in February 2003 to be incorporated in the Musée du Quai Branly.  So now the
Palais de la Porte Doree only holds the tropical aquarium.

Palais de la Porte Doree - Tropical Aquarium

The building and its interior were renovated in 1985 with all of the old installations being completely redone and the Palace of the Golden Gate has been equipped with modern technology, while still preserving much of the original and historical aspects of the place.

Although this tropical aquarium centre is not as impressive as some centres, it is still well worth a visit, plus it is used a lot by schools for educational trips, as it possible to get a lot more from this place in terms of information on aquatic fauna, both for the amateur and the expert.

The Palais de la Porte Doree - Aquarium Tropical is situated close to a lark park area in the Bercy district of the 12th Arrondissement of Paris and suitable for the whole family, you can discover a rich collection of around 5000 aquatic creatures from approximately 300 species.

If you have a love for sea creatures, then you will be able to find tank after tank of all different kinds from electric fish to tropical marine fish, fish from Asia, through to Africa.  From the discus to the clown fish, sea anemones to mandarins, you can indulge yourself in this fascinating and colourful world marine life of tropical fish.

Plus temporary exhibitions are also held here and some of the exhibitions have included tropical fish from the Amazon, piranhas and Crocodiles.

The Palais de la Porte Doree - Aquarium Tropical is a very interesting and informative place that also has historic rooms and a hall on the ground floor that are also open to the public.

There are also specific tours that are conducted and these can include lectures, workshops, or specific itineraries and activities for those who prefer to explore the aquarium from a truly educational standpoint, which is great for students and those studying marine life.

The Palais de la Porte Doree - Aquarium Tropical is open from a Tuesday to a Friday from 10am to 5pm and at the weekends it does not close until 7pm, yet is closed on a Monday.  It is open on certain national holidays, but not all of them, so it is worth checking prior to your visit.

The cost of the visit does vary, depending upon whether there are temporary exhibitions being held or not, which of course means it is cheaper when there are no temporary exhibitions, plus there are season tickets available for those that want to visit more frequently.  Children under the age of four are free when accompanied by a full paying adult.
