Musée de la Vie Romantique

This town house, which is set in a little park at the foot of Montmartre in the Nouvelle Athènes area of the 9th arrondissement in Paris, has been turned into a museum.

It is located just off of Rue Pierre Fontaine, and is between Place Blanche and Place Saint-Georges.

Born in 1795, Ary Scheffer was a well known painter who lived in this private residence from 1830 along with his nephew Ernest Renan who was a writer, through to 1858 when he died.

Musée de la Vie Romantique In Paris France

After their deaths, the place became a celebration of their lives along with their circle of friends, which included people such as Chopin, Delacroix and George Sand.

The museum presents collections of souvenirs and different works of art for two great people of the 19th century, namely the writer George Sand and the painter Ary Scheffer, which were left to the City of Paris.

Did you know that George Sand was actually a woman and her real name was Aurore Dudevant?  She was an incredible woman who had an impressive literary career, but dressed like a man and smoked cigars, plus had affairs with many great artists, writers, and musicians!

And the Musee de la vie Romantique has the main room dedicated entirely to George Sand, which includes exhibits of furniture, personal belongings including her cigarette box, lockets and other jewellery, plus watercolours that were moved from her house in the Loire Valley.

This is a museum that has lots of atmosphere and you get to see into their real daily lives, with their living and working environment of these incredibly talented romantics, also on the other side of the courtyard you will be able to experience Ary Scheffer's workshop where he worked and entertained.

It is a surprising little piece of history with a long cobblestone entrance and charming garden and within the summer months or when really nice weather, you can enjoy a cup of tea and cake in the little cafe in the garden, which has been converted from the greenhouse.

There are actually three buildings and the first atelier houses the ticket desk and book shop, the second atelier, which was Ary Scheffer's workshop also houses temporary exhibits, and the main house is where the permanent collection is located.

Again, the summertime is the best time to visit this museum with its quaint secluded tree lined passage that opens up onto the garden courtyard, as you can also get to experience concerts and readings too.

The Musee de la Vie Romantique is open from a Tuesday through to a Sunday from 10am to 5pm, but is closed on Mondays.

However, the garden cafe is only open from May through to September and serves tea, beautiful tarts and cakes plus some salads.
