Musee de l'Erotisme Museum In Paris

This will not be the type of museum that everyone would want to visit whilst on holiday in Paris, because it is designed for the over 18's and people that are definitely open minded as it is a museum all about eroticism that is explored through different cultures and different periods in history.

Alain Plumey and Joseph Khalifa founded the Museum of Eroticism in a seven-story building that used to be a cabaret venue, initially with their own collections of erotic art and artefacts that they had amassed over the years.

Musee de l'Erotisme Museum In Paris

It is home to a vast collection of erotic art from around the world and throughout the centuries, which includes paintings, sculptures and photographs and erotic artefacts such as pottery.

Since its inauguration in 1997, the museum has been able to display works from numerous different artists and there is a permanent collection, plus there are also temporary exhibitions held on three floors of this museum.

The Musee de l'Erotisme is appropriately situated in the Pigalle, Montmartre area in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, near to the famous Moulin Rouge, which is where the majority of the brothels used to be located and it is one of very few museums in Paris that is open until late, just like the Palais de Tokyo, where they are both open until midnight or later.

There is a very interesting and extensive gallery that contains documentation, photographs and drawings that date from the 19th century onwards and are all related to the red light district of Paris, prostitution and the brothels that were in operation until they were closed down by the French government back in 1946.  Included with many of the displays are captions both in French and English and you may be surprised to learn that some famous names like Charlie Chaplin experienced the Paris bordellos.

Also included within the collection are exhibits of carvings from Africa, miniatures from India, ivories from China and prints from Japan, plus old style porn films and furniture!

This museum is not really seedy and no where as 'in your face' as the museum of erotic art in Amsterdam is, but is very professionally done in a beautiful building with its marble floors.

There is also a gift shop that sells such things as figurines, amulets from Asia and bronzes, plus there is a gallery where you can purchase different works of erotic art.

The Musee de l'Erotisme is open every day of the week from 10am until to 2am and photography is even allowed!
