Designed by the architect Roger Taillibert, the stadium was built in 1972 and houses a permanent museum along with the space for additional temporary exhibitions that are all related to the favourite past times of sport.

The main exhibition area, which is home to the Musee National du Sport, includes the history and evolution of sport within France along with the origins of certain games that have become popular throughout the country.
